Green bins smash Kingston record
Kingston recyclers have broken their own record.
Residents last month recycled 1580 tonnes of green waste - 130 tonnes more last year.
With a total of 13,400 tonnes collected for the year, the result is 2100 more than for the whole of 2009. Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said this was partly due to gardens thriving after above average October rainfall.
“Our green waste collection has gone through the roof,” Cr Staikos said.
Cr Staikos said attitudes towards recycling had improved since green waste bins were introduced 10 years ago.
“The community has really taken to it. They understand it, they respect it, and they want to make sure they’re doing the right thing.
Cr Staikos said Kingston’s three-bin system was central to its success. “It makes people think about what we put into our rubbish bins,” Cr Staikos said.
Kingston Council runs free green waste workshops to educate residents about composting and worm farming.
