Council rules out hard-rubbish fossickers crackdown
Moonee Valley Council says it will not start cracking down on people who take items put out for hard rubbish collection.
The clarification on the council’s stances comes after police charged a Lilydale man with theft for scavenging a vacuum cleaner from a hard rubbish pile on a Chirnside Park nature strip.
Moonee Valley Mayor Cr John Sipek, also on the Melbourne Metro Waste Management Board, said the council was realistic in its expectations of what people should do.
“The reality is that people do take items put out for hard rubbish collection. This happens all over Melbourne,” he said.
“While Moonee Valley City Council would actively discourage this activity, it is not policed.
“The other issue is that scavengers spread the rubbish around while looking for their treasure. Steel tends to be the product most commonly scavenged from collections.”
