Recycle your unwanted electronics this weekend, Blacktown

Blacktown City Council is pleased to announce the return of the successful electronic waste recycling weekend; E-Cycle It – this coming weekend.

Between 9am – 3pm, on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17, October 2010 residents will be able to bring their old electronic waste along for recycling at the Blacktown Showground (entrance via Richmond Road). Electronic waste that will be accepted over the weekend includes:

• Computers • Laptops • Fax machines • Keyboards • Hand held devices • Network and memory cards • Floppy disks and CD/DVD drives • UPS System • Printers • Scanners • Telephones and mobile phones • Joysticks • Computer game consoles including hand held • Televisions • Video players • Hi-fi equipment • Stereo equipment • Digital cameras • Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTS) • Kitchen and household appliances including microwaves • Photocopiers • Projectors • Household batteries • Light globes

For the first time, household batteries will also be accepted for recycling, and fluorescent globes and mixed household globes will be accepted at the collection.

Council has partnered with Sims E-Recycling for E-Cycle It to achieve the best possible environmental outcomes. Sims has a unique automated E-Waste recycling facility at Villawood, where up to 98 percent of all material is recovered for reuse as raw materials in the manufacturing of new products. Materials recovered include steel, copper, plastic, glass, aluminium and PVC. Each tonne of E-Waste recycled saves 3 to 5 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Council will also work with the group Technical Aid to the Disabled (TAD) NSW after the E-Cycle It weekend to refurbish viable computers where possible, so they can be provided back to community organisations and the community. TAD volunteers refurbish computers, install software and assist in installing computers in client's homes.

The following types of electronic equipment will not be accepted at the E-Cycle It event: • Hazardous waste • Cathode Ray Tubes that are cracked or broken • No whitegoods • Smoke alarms / detectors • X Ray Tubes • Loose toner or ink cartridge
