Ways to make rubbish very useful

If you are hiding old car batteries in your garage, you are not alone.

Planet Ark recycling programs manager Janet Sparrow said the organisation received more than 800 inquiries a day relating to batteries, printer cartridges and mobile phones, because people were unsure what to do with them.

Small electronic waste items are on the hit list for National Recycling Week, which runs until November 14.

“Most people know to put their empty aluminium cans in the kerbside recycling bin, but when it comes to electronic waste, we’re less likely to get it right,” Ms Sparrow said.

“It’s best to check Planet Ark’s website for information on local recycling options.”

Everything except electronic equipment will be accepted at Logan City Council’s Big Aussie Swap this Saturday, being held as part of National Recycling Week.

People can swap items such as clothing, toys and homewares as long as the swapped goods can be carried by hand.

“Last year was the first time we participated in the Big Aussie Swap and we had a great response from the community,” Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Lisa Bradley said.

“We all know we need to re-use and recycle, but it is quite often forgotten what may no longer be of use to one person could possibly be a treasure to someone else.”

Cr Bradley said the recycling market diverts more than 1200 tonnes of material from landfill.

Also as part of the day residents will have the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes at the recycling market, with the annual Logan Waste Fair starting at 10 am.

Logan produces about 120,000 tonnes of waste to landfill each year. Swappers must register from 9.30am and are limited to three items per person.

Logan Recycling Market is at 349 Brown Plains Rd, Heritage Park.
