Camping shop gutted after blaze in bin
A fire which gutted a western Sydney camping store, causing several million dollars worth of damage, may have started in a dumpster bin, police say.
Hundreds of people were evacuated from Mulgoa Road shopping complex at Jamisontown when fire broke out and engulfed Kangaroo Tent City just after 6pm (AEDT) yesterday, the NSW Fire Brigade said.
The area was locked down amid fears that gas bottles stored on site might explode.
NSW Fire Brigade Superintendent Chris Jurgeit said firefighters managed to stop the blaze spreading into neighbouring shops and eventually brought it under control within 45 minutes.
No one was injured but the store's entire stock was destroyed, he said.
Police and fire investigators are trying to determine if the blaze is suspicious, but say it is believed to have started in a large bin at the rear of the shop.
Damage to the premises is estimated to exceed several million dollars, police said.
Investigations are continuing.
