Laith cleans up at Kings School
What started as a complaint by Kings Preparatory School student Laith Jammal, about dumping rubbish in his street, has turned into a call for action to clean up the streets of North Parramatta.
Laith raised Parramatta Council’s awareness of illegal dumping and the council has drafted a policy to combat this problem.
Laith, 11, had noticed an increase in kerbside dumping of rubbish in his street and on further investigation realised there was a greater problem across his suburb.
He contacted the council and with the support of the Lord Mayor John Chedid, a Dob in a Dumper hotline was established.
The council has since established an illegal dumping policy and allocated more resources to clean up the streets of North Parramatta.
Since then, one prosecution has been made and the Council has reduced curbside rubbish collected by 20 tonnes.
The Kings Preparatory School headmaster Keith Dalleywater praised Laith’s sense of community.
